Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Now that spring is finally here, I thought it was time to do a little spring closet cleaning and refresh my wardrobe a little bit! I’ve been wanting to simplify things and freshen up what I wear every day, and the best way to do that in my opinion is to create a capsule wardrobe! I’ve done a few of these before in the past, and it really helped me to make sure I wear the clothes in my closet by focusing on a few items every month/season.  And by a few, I mean 40.

The beauty of doing a capsule wardrobe and selectively choosing what you’ll wear for the next season is that you can make sure that you really get a lot of wear out of seasonal pieces and you don’t get bogged down and frustrated trying to decide what to wear in the mornings. You know exactly what options you have and can make fast, easy choices that you know you’re going to love.

There’s lots of different ways to create a capsule wardrobe for yourself, and honestly any way you choose is probably going to be great. Some people only pick 30 items, some people include accessories, some people don’t count in shoes, some people do them monthly – it’s really up to you!! I decided that I was going to choose 40 items for mine because I wanted to not do laundry ALL the time, I wanted to have good variety between work and weekend outfits, and I wanted to include lots of shoes in an effort to force myself to actually wear the shoes I already own. I didn’t include any undergarments (like camis) or accessories (like purses) in mine because I only have a few bags that I switch between depending on the occasion. Here’s what I included!

10 tops

I tried to pick tops that would be good layered (mostly at work and church, both of which are FREEZING even when it’s hot outside) but could also be cute and appropriate to wear on their own (like on weekends or during my commute). I threw in a t-shirt for when I’m feeling super casual (which is honestly like once a month lol) and a few longer-sleeve blouses that don’t need to be layered at all. If you don’t need to layer as much as I do, then you can add a few more tops and take out a few layering pieces – just think about what you wear on a regular basis and build your capsule around that!

A lot of the tops I’m including in my capsule are “oldies but goodies” aka I bought them at TJ Maxx years ago but they’re still things that I love and wear regularly. I did add a few replacement items that I purchased recently, like this green blouse and this green tank.

7 layering pieces

Since I’m in a lot of “brrr I’m freezing” scenarios in my life, I really like to make sure I have a lot of good layering options/cardigans to choose from. And also I just love me a good cardigan! I made sure to have a variety of colors that would go with most of the tops I put in my capsule, along with a black blazer for work and a jean jacket for cuteness!

5 dresses & skirts

Texas gets hot and it’s nice to have some fun dress/skirt options to look cute and keep cool! I’ve gotten into such a rut of wearing jeans every day to work, so I’m hoping having some cute dresses will make me want to dress up a little more. At least once a week. We’ll see how that goes. I can already anticipate that I’ll be wanting to wear this black eyelet dress a LOT!

8 bottoms

Because I do pretty much wear jeans every day, I wanted to make sure that I had a LOT of options to wear. Black jeans, dark jeans, lighter jeans, white jeans, green pants that are like jeans but aren’t actually denim, distressed jeans for the weekend – gotta have ’em all! I made sure to also have my favorite shorts in the mix and a fun jumpsuit, too! I love this black one because it’s so simple – you can dress it up, dress it down, wear it to work, church, running errands, out to dinner – the possibilities are endless.

10 pairs of shoes

Just like wearing jeans to work everyday, I’ve gotten in a huge ret with wearing the same 2 pairs of shoes and basically nothing else. Now, you can’t go wrong with a pair of black flats and a pair of tan loafers… but there are just so many other options I can go with! In an effort to actually wear other footwear, I added TEN pairs of shoes to my capsule. And yes, that does feel like a lot, but each pair is so distinct in shape/color/pattern/occasion that they all still feel necessary. Thankfully I already had pretty much all the shoes I’d need, and I only had to replace a worn-out pair of sandals that could be worn to work (I found these cuties).

I’m a Texas Girl Now!

When I first moved to Texas in 2015, I had never heard of Kendra Scott (I know – it’s hard to believe now!) I had never even seen any of her jewelry before. It wasn’t really a “thing” in Missouri yet, and I was genuinely confused why every girl in Dallas was wearing the exact same pair of earrings. And then I noticed that they all had the same little necklaces, too. What was happening and what was I missing?!?! Finally I asked a co-worker who was wearing a pair of those earrings (which I loved!) what they were and why they were so popular and she just looked at me shocked and gasped “YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF KENDRA SCOTT?!?!?” Well now I had!

I spent the next few years loving this new-to-me brand, but had never purchased anything for myself. I bought some earrings as gifts for friends and family, but still couldn’t manage to spend that much on something for me. But a few months ago I went to a fundraiser at Kendra Scott for a ministry that I volunteer with and a good chunk of any purchases made went back to the organization, so I FINALLY bought myself a pair of earrings!

I was amazing by all the beautiful colors and also overwhelmed by all the beautiful colors. I wanted to get a pair that I would wear all the time and ended up going with these silver earrings – and I LOVE THEM! I seriously wear them all the time and I finally feel like a true Texas gal.

While walking through the store, there were just so many things that I loved and if I had unlimited money, I would have bought all of them! (Apparently during your birthday month you can go in and get half off one item?!?! So I’ll definitely be doing that next year. It will be hard to pick which item, though!) Here’s some of the other items I have been eyeing since making my first purchase.

Did Y’all Know About Talbots?!!?

Seriously!! Why?!?!? I’ve literally never shopped at Talbots in my life (I always thought it was kind of an “old lady” brand for some reason…) but I stumbled across a few items I loved online the other day and THEY WERE FROM TALBOTS! What?!?!? Then later I checked on a few Like to Know It links in my inbox from Instagram posts I’d liked and a few of those items were also from TALBOTS!

So I quickly opened up a new tab in my browser and searched for the Talbots website. I was browsing through all the clothes and you guys…. they have CUTE stuff! Some of it is a bit… mature… but I’d say that I would honestly wear at least 75% of this stuff. The clothes have a classic look, they’re not too trendy, and they seem like they would last from season to season (aka not cheap Forever21 clothes that wear out after 1 season of wear.)

The only downside is the price. I’m still kind of cheap, and so these prices seemed a little bit on the expensive side to me. I think I need to start shifting my mindset and recognize that it’s ok to spend a little bit more on a quality item that will last a LONG time – maybe I can start doing that with something from Talbots!

There were a TON of items that I absolutely loved (again, I would totally wear the majority of the clothes on the website) but here were a few of my favorites.

I Tried Rent the Runway and it was AWESOME

Like most people with internet access, I’m sure you’ve heard of the company Rent the Runway (RTR as I’ve been calling it lately). If not, let me explain what it is! It’s an online shop where you rent higher-end dresses and accessories (and some separates, too) instead of buying them. It’s such a fun concept! So instead of spending $600 buying the perfect dress you’ll only wear once, you spend $50 renting it for 4 or 8 days.

I wanted to find something fun and fancy to wear to my friend Jen’s rehearsal dinner, but was having a hard time finding something I liked enough at the store, that fit well, and that wasn’t WAY out of my budget. I didn’t feel like anything in my closet was nice enough, and shopping was wearing me out. Then, I remembered that my friend Allison had been looking at RTR for a dress to wear to the wedding, and so I hopped online and started looking, too!

There were SO MANY GREAT DRESSES to choose from! My favorite part of their concept is that you get to order a backup size absolutely FREE! And the customers leave great and helpful reviews and pictures, so you can better know just what size (and backup size) you should order. For example, one of the dresses I picked, according to reviews, tended to run a bit big, so I knew to order a size down.

I ended up renting 2 dresses because they were having a special, and I am in love with BOTH of them – I really didn’t want to send them back!!!

Here is what I rented to wear to the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. I loved the lace stripes, and it was so elegant and perfect for the dinner. It fit like a dream and was the perfect length.

I paired it with a big turquoise statement necklace and felt so beautiful that night! (Also I’m just now realizing that I didn’t actually take any pictures that night… so this will have to do. And honestly I just wanted to get a picture of the sick braid I did, so let’s all appreciate that, too, haha.)

Because of the special they were running (rent two for the price of one) I went ahead and ordered another dress to wear for the after party after the wedding reception ended. I loved my bridesmaid dress, but it was floor length and didn’t have much give, so I wanted something that would be easier to dance in. I picked this gorgeous pink Kate Spade dress with a GIANT bow in the back and it was perfect!!!

I got to dance the night away in comfort and style and of course I spent half of the evening going around and making sure everyone saw the gorgeous bow on the back! It’s not in my budget to buy a $450 Kate Spade dress, so it was REALLY fun to get to wear one for a night, for basically no money at all!

Man, I need to get better about taking full length pictures with other people…. 🙂

If you haven’t tried Rent the Runway yet, I HIGHLY recommend it!! It was so easy and so fun, and they send your dresses in a garment bag that already includes your return shipping label (and it’s free to ship them back!) The site always has a discount for first time renters, too, so you don’t have anything to lose! You can sort items by size, date needed, color, formality, price, designer – you’re basically guaranteed to find a great dress!

Brand Spotlight: Goodnight Macaroon

One of my fave games is to fill up my online shopping cart, sigh, then sadly (but triumphantly!) exit the browser without making any purchases. You know that game. How many of you have played that game?

So you get it. Even though I don’t have a massive budget where I can endlessly spend on new clothes every month, I do still like to look! I have a couple of reliable sites where I like to peruse and pretend shop, ranging from the cheaper side that I would actually make real purchases from (Old Navy, Banana Republic, J.Crew Factory, Zara) to the more expensive that while I probably can’t afford a lot of it, it’s still fun to look (Draper James, Lilly Pulitzer, J.Crew, Brooks Brothers).

One online boutique that I have been looking at a lot over the last year or so is Goodnight Macaroon. So many of the cute outfits I see on Instagram come from here, and they always have some pretty good sales going. I think they kind of fall middle-of-the-road as far as pricing goes, but you can get some seriously good deals on some seriously cute things! I went through and found some of my favorite items to share!
