Whole30 Week 1

In case you missed it or the title of this post wasn’t obvious enough, yesterday I shared that I did the Whole30! I wrote down my thoughts at the end of every day because 1. I wanted to remember what it was like in case I decide to do another round of Whole30 sometime in the future and 2. Knowing that I had to write something about that day was major motivation for me not to cheat!

Day 1: Today wasn’t so bad! Actually, it wasn’t bad at all! But I’m pretty sure this is the easiest day for everyone, so… One down, 29 to go. I can totally do this.. it’s only 30 days.

Day 2: Ummm I’ve done it for a full day already… is the magic supposed to kick in yet? No? Really? Darn it.

Day 3: I ate healthy-ish before (or so I thought), so this really isn’t too much of a shock. I would only have dairy or wheat once or twice a week, so I don’t really feel like I’m missing out yet. I don’t miss sugar… yet… but I know that will come!

Day 4: Based on the meals I’ve had so far, I’m probably going to be eating a lot of chicken. And salad. And eggs. I need to get better about cooking some more things.

Day 5: To really test this, I stopped taking my daily allergy medication to see if this process will help with my seasonal allergies. It was a sneezy day. Hopefully that changes soon.

Day 6: I feel like my appetite has dropped waaaaaaay down. Like, I wasn’t hungry at all today, even at meal times. Is that normal? They talk about this in the book, but I don’t remember what they said at the moment. I’ll look it up.

Day 7: I had the most INTENSE craving today! I just wanted to eat all the cheese. Queso, pizza, more pizza, anything and everything with cheese!

Week 1 down! My favorite meal of the week: Huge spinach salad with 2 hard-boiled eggs, cubed ham, and baby carrots. Yum!

I did the Whole30!

I did it! It’s all finished! 30 days of super strict healthy eating to reset my body and then 12 days of reintroducing foods back in very slowly. It was a pretty good experience and in the end I’m glad that I did it, but I’ll be going into all the gory details later. First, a little bit of introduction to the process and a little bit about why I decided to do the Whole 30.

The Book: First off, you need to read the book. (Ok you don’t need to, but it will be really helpful if you do.) Not only does it lay out all the rules for your 30 day experiment, but it starts off giving you the ‘why’ behind it. It was pretty science-y, but they did a great job using analogies to help you understand how all of those delicious foods we love interact with our bodies and why we should probably never eat them ever again.

The Rules: Are you ready to hear some craziness? Get ready. For 30 days, you can not have added sugar (real or artificial), alcohol, grains, legumes, and no dairy. Whew. You aren’t supposed to take measurements or weigh yourself during the process, you should be focusing on the changes in how you feel and how your health changes. You also are supposed to try and avoid snacking. If you’re starving, then it is ok, but you’re trying to reprogram how your think about food here.

Once you are done with the 30 days and you’re finished patting yourself on the back, you spend the next few days slowly bringing those off-limits foods back into your system to evaluate how they make you feel. (Read even more on the official website!)

Why I Did It: Honestly, I really did not want to do this. At all. Ever. I heard about it nonstop for a while and it got to the point where the name “Whole30” was extremely annoying to me. I visibly rolled my eyes even thinking about it. I just didn’t want to jump on some bandwagon and become one of ‘those people’ who only posted instagram pictures of poorly plated food with 20 different hashtags that were all just a variation on the same 3 words/phrases. I didn’t even tell my friends or family that I was doing this because honestly, I didn’t want to annoy them with it. (End rant.)

I finally decided to give it a try because I thought, what’s the worst that could happen? I spend a month eating kind of boring food. What’s the best that could happen? I could sleep better. I could alleviate some of the knee joint pain that I’ve had since high school. I could get rid of some of my seasonal allergies. I could lose a few pounds and have my clothes fit better. I could change the way I think about food and be more intentional about what I put in my body.

So…  Do I now feel any better or different? You’ll find out soon! I’m going to chronicle my experience week by week, so get ready!

I Love Sweet Potato Fries!

Seriously. I love sweet potato fries so much. I could have them with every single meal and be a very happy camper (in fact I did have them with dinner every night this past week…. not even sorry). It’s pretty much a given that whenever they are an option at a restaurant, I will shell out the extra dollar to upgrade to sweet potato fries. Totally worth it. One of my favorite things about them, besides their deliciousness, is that they are SO easy to make at home! There are a few ways that you can make these bad boys, but here is my usual method!

1. Pour a little bit of EVOO into a bowl (just enough to lightly coat the fries. Better to have too little at first and have to add a little bit more later.)

2. Add some spices in your bowl and mix it all up. I usually put in a little bit of garlic powder, cumin, and parsley flakes, but there are LOTS of combos that would be delicious!

3. Peel your sweet potatoes and cut them into your desired shapes. Sometimes I go with wedges, sometimes I make little sweet potato chips! (You don’t want them to be too thick or they won’t cook thoroughly, but you don’t want them to be too thin or they will BURN and your whole house will smell disgusting.)

4. Plop your fries into the oil mixture and toss to coat.

5. Spread the fries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Be sure that your fries aren’t touching!

6. Bake the fries at 450 degrees for 20 minutes (you might need a little more or less, depending on your oven, the thickness of your fries, etc.) Be sure to flip your fries at least once- I flip mine every 5 minutes.

7. Wait for them to cool and then eat your heart out!!
